With 4 days off between tours, it didn't seem worth heading back to the UK, so I decided to explore another city I hadn't been to before - Valladolid. It's the primary seat of government and de facto capital of Castilla León and also the capital of the province of Valladolid. With a population of around 370,000, it's a fair sized city.
Now I had a short list of some of the things I wanted to see/do while I was there, but failed miserably on 2 of those. You see, top of that list was to drive out to the town of Antiguedad - about an hour away. Well it would have made hiring a car possible if I had remembered to take my drivers license with me. D'oh. That also meant that I couldn't go out to the Ribeira de Duero wine region. Double D'oh.
Oh well, I had a great little apartment right in the centre of town, so spent a lovely few days just wandering around enjoying the city. It was still very hot, so several siestas were required. A walking tour gave me a bit of information and the city was pumping the night Spain played in the world cup semi's against France.
And who did I find? Once again Miguel de Cervantes popped up. So this time I visited Casa de Cervantes Museum. He only lived here two years. They have a very impressive library of old books. I'm not stalking him - honest and no I have not read anymore of Don Quixote, but I feel we now know each other like long lost cousins.
Lots of beautiful buildings and plazas and the food was cheaper than other places. So it was with great pleasure that I got to eat at Alquimia - but more on that next time.
