18th Tick - Visit the London Museum Docklands

I woke up on Saturday 11th to a freezing cold -4 but a clear blue sky. As I lay there, I thought about my dear mama who died 21 years ago on this day. I still miss her everyday, gone way too soon. As I get older, I look more and more like her and that's OK with me.

So when I eventually managed to get my warm toes out of the bed (helped by the buzz of someone wanting to get in downstairs), I thought, mustn't waste a blue sky day, life is short and we never know when it will be our turn. A quick look at the list and I decided on a visit to the London Museum Docklands

Docklands London is much like Docklands Melbourne. An area that in recent times has seen lots of changes, new residential areas, tall office blocks, restaurants and shops. All very modern and nice, but both feel slightly soulless. TBH, I'm still not sure if it's all part of Canary Wharf, or if Docklands is a separate area. I always thought the area was all called Canary Wharf - never been, still unsure, doesn't matter.

Back to the main reason of my visit. To visit the London Museum, located at the No. 1 Warehouse West India Quay (but soon to be moved). This is another one of London's many free museums and tells the story of London's river, port and the people from the 1600s through to today who lived and worked here. The displays are excellent and a large part tells the story of the slave trade. Not pretty, but an important one to remember. Other sections talk about the ships, the docks and life in London during the 18th and 19th century as the city grew. It covers, the war and other major events during the 600 years to where it stands today. Interesting and informative.

After that, I did go for a walk around Canary Wharf. There is a large shopping centre and some nice places to eat. Lots of art and green spaces around the water, but as I mentioned, feels soulless. But a tick off the list and I've now visited another part of London that I'd never been to before.
