Would you go to a restaurant where the service is terrible and the staff rude? The usual answer would be no, but that's exactly why I wanted to go and check out Karen's Diner. First heard about it back in Melbourne where they were doing pop-up Karen's, but never got around to visiting.
So now in London courtesy of a Groupon voucher because I'm trying to save or just a tight arse as pointed out by the staff at Karen's Diner (no shame here), it was time to visit.
I happened to walk in at the same time as a family and it was assumed that I was the grandma. OK, fair enough. My hat (everyone is given a paper hat) read "I remember the dinosaurs." Fairly tame compared to my Neighbours, one who apparently had crabs and the other who had a bad case of thrush.
Menus are thrown at you, drinks may be delivered or you might be told to go and get it yourself and the banter is continuous. There were a couple of "games" or getting people up to do something silly and there is some swearing. Overall, it's funny and a couple of the staff members could be stand up comedians.
As for the food, I had a burger and chips and a beer and it was delivered quickly. The burger was good, the fries fine and the beer nice and cold. Was it the best I'd ever had? No, but nowhere near the worst either. If you want cutlery or heaven forbid, a serviette, you need to beg. Extra mayo? Go find it yourself from one of the other tables.
I thought it was fun and there were a few groups celebrating birthdays which would be a great thing to do. It's a shame that the franchise is struggling and all but this one in London have closed. Apparently they are trying to rebrand so hopefully they'll manage to stay open. If not, well I'm glad I got to go and experience the terrible service.
And to my friends who are actually named Karen, love you. #bemorekaren
