If you're of a certain age, although I could be wrong and it could still be a regular thing, then you'll remember the good old apple crumble. Served with cream or custard it wasn't a regular thing in our house. My Aunt Nell on the other hand (not my real Aunt, those parents friends who all became surrogate Aunt's and Uncle's), often made an excellent apple crumble and would serve it with custard and/or ice cream.
I've heard and seen Humble Crumble at the Camden and Borough Markets and there is always a queue. So there I was on this 3 tick Thursday having a wander through the Borough Market. If you've been on a weekend or around lunchtime, then you'll know it's always packed, no matter the season. But on this cold Thursday afternoon around 4pm, it's really rather quiet. So with only 4 people in the queue, this was my chance and I was already feeling rather giddy with my accomplishments for the day.
I went the traditional. Apple and Cinamon Crumble with hot custard (who the hell is asking for cold custard - you weirdo. Even on a hot summers day it would have to be hot custard). £7.50. Even found a place to sit, which at the Borough Market, is a miracle.
Verdict? It was good, not too sweet. My favourite part is the topping and the custard - so more of that and less apple would have been better. Best I've had? No, that would still be Aunt Nell's, even though that may be in part due to nostalgia. Will I be adding it to the make it at home list - probably not (unlike the Basque Cheesecake). But if I was going to make it, this seems close to what I remember, but I'd add the oats as well. Easy apple crumble recipe.
They actually do a bake at home kit that supposedly serves 8 for £32.50 which seems rather expensive for what it is.
And with that, my 4 tick day was done. 2 freebies and 2 under £10 ticks. All in a days work.
