Back in July, I was on my Northern Spain shadow tour and Luis asked who wanted to try the best Basque cheesecake in the world. Now I do love a good cheesecake, Basque or otherwise, so this was an offer I couldn't pass up. The only regret, when Luis mentioned that each serving came with two pieces, so did I want to share. Sure I said. Big mistake. Huge. I could have easily eaten both pieces of this gooey, smooth, creamy, orgasmic inducing deliciousness. La Viña in San Sebastian was the place to be and the line that formed before opening time was proof of its popularity. Their pintxos didn't look too shabby either, noted for another day. Good article by Conde Nest Traveller on La Viña here.
Since that day, my love affair with Basque cheesecake began and I was counting down the days until I would be returning to San Sebastian. And return I did, early October. Maybe it wouldn't be as good as the first time. Maybe I'd be disappointed. I wasn't. It was just as good as I remembered. And yes, I ate both pieces. On that tour, I tried several other Basque cheesecakes and although they were good, they didn't quiet hit the dizzying heights of La Viña. The standard had been set.
Back in London, I was just a little bit excited when I heard about a place here dedicated to the Basque Cheesecake. A visit to La Maritxu was added to the list. As much as I'd like all the things on my 60 before 60 list to be BIG things, my bank balance says NO. In fact, I think I have to review the list and remove some of the more expensive stuff and throw in a few more cheaper/free things. Cossie lives and all that.
Anyway, the day arrived and it was time to visit La Maritxu. In I went and ordered a piece of cheesecake and a coffee £8.50. I realise I've been here long enough when the price seemed reasonable and I no longer convert everything back to Aussie $. Mouth watering, I took my first bite. Creamy, light, a slight hint of vanilla flavour, soft and delicious. Maybe a tad firmer than the one at La Viña, but certainly very good. If La Viña is a 10/10, I'd rate this one a solid 9 and the coffee was good too.
Now it's time to have a go at making my own. Stay tuned. Oh and because I don't want to lose the recipe I'm going to try, here it is: Basque Cheesecake Authentic Recipe | TasteAtlas
