6th Tick - Eat a Banh Mi at Bun Bun Bakery in Springvale (Vic)

Another quick and easy tick off the list. One of the things I've missed about living in Australia, is the great Asian food that you can find everywhere. Staying near Clayton, I'd wander up to the library and pass by Banh Mi Bakery and Cafe. There would be a short line. Tradies, students, locals all patiently waiting for one of those orange bags to be filled with lunch. And on four separate occasions, I joined them. The bread roll was crusty, the pate/butter ratio perfect, some carrots and cucumber to add crunch, onion, hoisin, chillies and of course chunks of juicy roast pork along with crackle. Divine. Oh once, I really mixed things up and went the roast chicken, because I can be reckless sometimes.

And so it was on my last day in Australia that we decided to go out for lunch and visit one of the most popular places for a banh mi. Now Melbourne has several areas where you can find fabulous Vietnamese food -  Richmond’s Victoria Street, Footscray’s Hopkins Street area, Collingwood’s Smith Street and right next to Clayton, Springvale. So off to Springvale we went and the place that gets the hype and the long line is Bun Bun Bakery. We waited around 20 minutes and finally it was our turn to order and watch as the goodies were crammed into a crunchy bread roll. Except coriander - the devils lettuce doesn't belong near any type of food.

Rolls clutched lovingly to our chests, we wandered through the bustling market and found a place to sit and dig in. There's nothing delicate about eating a banh mi, but god they're good. Verdict? It was delicious, but I think I  the one up the road in Clayton just pipped it. Maybe it was because it was the first one I ate after being away for four years or maybe it was just a teeny bit better.

I miss them already. And my mouth is watering.
