A guy runs into a bar and yells, “Quick! How tall is a penguin?”
The bartender says, “Three feet tall.”
The guy says, “Oh my God! I just ran over a nun!”
OK, it's an old joke, but seriously, penguins are really cute. They also only live in the Southern Hemisphere.
So with this in mind, I set off to the area around Fleet Street in search of the Penguin Parade. 12 Christmas themed Penguins decorated by different artists in support of WWF. Which when you think about it doesn't make much sense as there are no penguins in the North Pole and we all know that is where Santa lives.
Might have helped if I collected a paper map before I set off in the wrong direction (how the hell am I a tour leader, my sense of direction is rubbish), but eventually I found Penguin number 4 and I was off and running. Well waddling at a penguin pace following my rather large lunch at Sandwich Sandwich.
I did finally manage to find all 12. Number 1, which was my 11th, was by far the hardest to find. In fact this is when thoroughly frustrated and having walked around St Paul's Cathedral twice, I walked into the information centre and asked "where's the penguin hiding?" Normally this may have been an odd question, but it was obviously not the first time the lovely ladies had been asked this question:
"Do you have a Penguin Parade Map?" they asked.
"Only the one online, but I'm nearly finished" I replied.
"Would you like one anyway, number 1 is a bit hard to find?" she asked
"Go on then and could you point me in the right direction?" I said.
With map in hand (in my defense, the location of Penguin number 1 on the map clearly says St Paul's Cathedral and it is not at or around St Paul's Cathedral) and helpful instructions, it still took me another 15 minutes to find "Tiffany" penguin number 1 hiding out behind Leaonard's Hotel. 11 down and 1 to go, I headed towards Blackfriars Station hoping that the map would not lead me astray, and there was penguin number 2. All found and accounted for.
It was a good way to discover a new bit of the city and get my steps up. Mission accomplished and tick.
