A two tick day - woo hoo! After our rather lush afternoon tea experience at the Ritz, B and I went from one extreme to the other and headed to the Viktor Wynd Museum. I think the actual place is called The Last Tuesday Society and it has an absinthe parlor and the Viktor Wynd Museum part is downstairs.
Now this isn't any ordinary bar, it is strange. We met Silvia and went in not really knowing what to expect. It’s delightfully unhinged. You walk in and immediately question whether you’ve accidentally joined a secret society. The décor is a mix of velvet, curiosities, and objects that look like they were stolen from a wizard’s attic during a full moon rave party.
We ordered a gin and tonic to start with and sat there sipping our drinks while the animals mounted on the wall watched us with beady eyes (because they are well, beads) apparently plotting our downfall. Once Charlie arrived, we set about ordering our Absinthe cocktail. Out came all the paraphernalia and I can't say it was really anymore enjoyable than our experience in Prague - taste wise. The experience itself is great. More than a cocktail, it feels like a potion. It is fun though. Oh, Silvia ordered a cheese toasty which looked very out of place on the menu, but was surprisingly tasty.
But the journey doesn’t end there. After a glass of the green fairy, we descended down the spiral staircase into the Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities. Now weird and bizarre are just two words to describe the collection. There are all sorts of things down there, from stuffed animals, disturbing books, unicorns, mermaids, two-headed lambs, magical soaps, skeleton fairies, photos, a pickled syphilis penis, famous pubes and poo and lots more. We giggled our way around and can only speculate as to the mind of the man who collected all of this stuff. But apparently he is rather nice, wealthy and slightly eccentric middle aged man who pops in regularly to admire his collection. Slightly eccentric doesn't seem to cover it.
But I am very glad I finally got to visit. I just don't think I need to see another pickled penis.
