An unexpected tick. 12 months ago I don't think I'd even heard of Yungblud. And if I had, it certainly didn't register. But all of a sudden, his name just kept popping up in my feed and a slightly weird obsession blossomed. The fact that he was in Australia at the same time I was, and wouldn't you know it, playing in Melbourne, fueled that obsession and all of a sudden I hit pay and voila, I was going along to see Yungblud. I needed to see for myself what all the fuss was about.
Who is Yungblud? Dominic Harrison (28), an English musician and actor. Released his first EP in 2018, he released his debut EP Yungblud, followed by his first full-length album 21st Century Liability. Never heard of it. So he's not exactly a new kid on the block and I just couldn't work out why he only now hit my radar. I think it was to do with the fact that on 5 July last year, he performed a cover of "Changes" at Ozzy Osbourne's final Black Sabbath concert in Birmingham. Ozzy died shortly after that on 22 July 2025. RIP. Oh and that performance, Yunglud won a Grammy for it.
So off I went one sunny Tuesday evening walking along with 1,000's of others, all clearly heading towards the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. It was certainly a diverse crowd, both in looks, genders and ages. I thought I'd feel like a slightly creepy old person, but no, there were lots of us. Once insider, the atmosphere was great. All very friendly. The support band were the Dune Rats, not bad and then it was time.
He performs like someone told him the stage floor is lava, the mic stand owes him money, and the audience is his long‑lost army. And honestly, the crowd adored him. He sprints across the stage like he’s powered by a mix of Red Bull, glitter, and unresolved teenage angst. Every time he jumps, (and he jumps a lot) you can see his low rise leather pants hanging on for dear life. OK, maybe I shouldn't have been looking so closely.
At one stage he leaps into the fray at the front and somehow manages to get all the way to a part of the stage back towards the hill. His poor security people bravely trying to keep his ear piece and clothes in place. And the way he talks to the audience? It’s like he’s giving a TED Talk titled “Chaos: A Lifestyle. He goes from heartfelt emotional speech to “ALRIGHT LET’S GO MENTAL” in under three seconds. One minute he's getting people to show him their tongue, the next he's overcome by emotion and looks like he's about to cry (motherly instinct, it's OK Dom, let it all out) and the next he's fondling the microphone like a naughty schoolboy. Not to mention a political rant on the goings on in Iran. But that’s the magic - it’s messy, loud, chaotic, and absolutely unforgettable. Not to mention he looks very good in chaps over low leather pants and no shirt. I loved it. And I got the t-shirt to prove it. Oh and yes, he does remind me of a young Adam Ant which could very much be the reason for the obsession. Hmmm, I see he's playing in the UK in April.....
