When I got the opportunity to do the Taste of the Camino Tour, I was equally excited and a little bit terrified. I would be doing it on the fly - no shadow tour to ease into it. But having been to some of the places and having walked the Portuguese Coastal Camino, not to mention the French, I agreed to give it a go. Reading about places is not the same as going, so it was a tad stressful. But there was one place I was very much looking forward to - visiting Cantabria for the first time and jumping on the Fuente De cable car in order to admire the Picos de Europa.
The scenery that whole day as we drove around some slightly scary mountain roads was stunning. The Picos de Europa are a mountain massif located up north that belongs to the central part of the Cantabrian mountain range. Before our cable car ride, we got to enjoy a delish lunch at the Parador de Fuente De. I'm yet to stay in a Parador, but it's on the list.
After lunch, it was time to make our way up to the cable car station. Now after surviving a long hot summer, the much cooler temperatures were a welcome change - although my wardrobe choices were somewhat lacking (not helped by losing my jacket before I even started the 2nd half of the season) and one of my lovely guests lent me a jacket. Up we went. Not great if you suffer from vertigo as it's steep and climbs high. Before we knew it, we were at the top - look ma, I'm on top of the world! Adam Ant - Friend or Foe.
The views are indeed spectacular - whichever way you look. Soaring birds, low cloud covered peaks and many a photo opportunity. It must also be truly beautiful in winter covered in snow. Maybe next year for my first tour there will still be some snow. I'll make sure I'm better prepared clothes wise.
